Unitary vs Federal Government

 

How far the Federal Government is better than the Unitary Government? According to many scholars of politics, present times, the federal governments certainly score over the unitary types of governments, when people of different religions, castes, and cultures reside in one and the same country. In the last modules, we have seen how a unitary form of government has proved a failure in Srilanka while a federal type of government has proved a great success in Belgium.

 

Much because all types of people have been accommodated in Belgium while majoritarianism has been thrust upon the people especially over the minority community in Sri Lanka.

 

Federal Countries of the world

 

According to an estimate out of the 192 countries of the world, about 25 countries have a federal form of government. Their population comes to about 40% of the world's population. Some of the chief federal countries of the world -S.A., Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, Russia, India, Australia, etc.

 

Indian Federalism Compared with Belgium

 

One Similar Feature of Federalism between India and Belgium. India and Belgium are both holding together federations where the Central Governments tend to be more powerful vis-a-vis the states. One Different Feature of Federalism between India and Belgium.

 

In Belgium, there are three kinds of governments:-government at the center, government at the state level, and the third kind of government is the Community government. The Community government has the power regarding culture, educational, and language-related issues.

 

But in India, there is no community government. Here there are only two types of governments. The first kind of government is at the center and the second kind of government is at the state level.
